What started at the turn of the century as an effort to gain a day of recognition for the significant contributions the first Americans made to the establishment and growth of the U.S., has resulted in a whole month being designated for that purpose.
One of the very proponents of an American Indian Day was Dr. 亚瑟C. 帕克是塞内加印第安人,曾任纽约州罗切斯特市艺术与科学博物馆馆长.Y. He persuaded the Boy Scouts of America to set aside a day for the “First Americans” and for three years they adopted such a day. 1915年,美国印第安人协会的年度大会在堪萨斯州的劳伦斯召开., formally approved a plan concerning American Indian Day. It directed its president, 牧师. 谢尔曼·柯立芝,阿拉帕霍人,号召全国人民纪念这一天. Coolidge issued a proclamation on Sept. 28, 1915, which declared the second Saturday of each May as an American Indian Day and contained the first formal appeal for recognition of Indians as citizens.
The year before this proclamation was issued, 红狐詹姆斯, 黑脚印第安人, 从一个州骑马到另一个州,寻求批准设立一个纪念印第安人的日子. 1915年12月14日,他在白宫递交了24个州政府的支持书. There is no record, however, of such a national day being proclaimed.
The first American Indian Day in a state was declared on the second Saturday in May 1916 by the governor of New York. Several states celebrate the fourth Friday in September. In Illinois, for example, legislators enacted such a day in 1919. 目前, several states have designated Columbus Day as Native American Day, 但它仍然是一个我们庆祝的日子,没有被承认为国家法定假日.
In 1990 President George H. W. 布什总统批准了一项联合决议,将1990年11月定为“全国印第安人遗产月”.类似的宣言, under variants on the name (including “Native American Heritage Month” and “National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month”) have been issued each year since 1994.
